Marketing terms, explained in plain English

Marketing people love jargon. You shouldn't need a translator to grow your business in West Chester or Downingtown — so here's every term you'll actually hear, in normal words.

Website

Your business's home on the internet. Open 24/7, works on every phone. For most local businesses one great page beats ten mediocre ones.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Setting up your website so Google shows it when locals search for what you do — like "landscaper Exton" or "hair salon Kennett Square." Not magic; mostly clear wording, town names, and a healthy site.

Google Business Profile

The box with your name, stars, hours, and map that shows up when someone Googles your business. It's free, and it's often the first thing people see — keeping it filled out and fresh matters as much as your website.

Lead

A person who raised their hand — they called, texted, filled out a form, or messaged you. Not a customer yet. Marketing's whole job is creating leads; your job is answering them fast.

Conversion

The moment a visitor becomes a lead (or a lead becomes a customer). If 100 people visit and 5 reach out, your site "converts" at 5%. Better pages = more conversions from the same visitors.

Landing page

A single page built for one job — usually turning an ad-click into a phone call. No distractions, one clear button.

CTA (Call to Action)

The button or line that tells people what to do next: "Book a free call," "Get a quote." Weak CTA, fewer calls. It's really that direct.

Google Ads / Facebook Ads

Paying to show up in front of local people — Google catches folks already searching for your service; Facebook/Instagram puts you in front of people who didn't know you existed. You control the budget.

CRM (Customer Relationship Manager)

One organized place that keeps track of every lead and customer — who called, who to follow up with, who paid — so nobody slips through the cracks. (Beats the sticky-note system.)

Follow-up / Funnel

The path from "just heard of you" to "paid customer," and the reminders/messages that keep people moving along it. Most lost sales aren't "no" — they're "nobody followed up."

AI chat assistant

A smart helper on your website that answers customer questions instantly, any hour, and helps them book with you. Like hiring a receptionist who never sleeps. More on AI tools →

Analytics

The numbers behind your site: how many people visited, where they came from, what they did. It's how you know what's working instead of guessing.
